A young New Orleans cabbie named Raymond Russell is so shocked by the intensity of a crime that he cannot write about it directly. He can only let out the occasional hint to prime the engine of his mind for what he must reveal. Errata is Raymond's 22 day attempt at correction of his seeming culpability, an ambitious neo-noir meditation on isolation and sociability, wisdom and madness, symbol and text, innocence and guilt.

"I swear, the text, the actual typed text of Errata itself seems swollen with meaning not simply the humid atmospherics of New Orleans. Swelled up, bled and run together into this concoction of pulpy fictive essaying. Michael Allen Zell's text is evocative, efficacious, effortlessly magical. These are words making love to words, wrapped up in sheets of steamy grammar all transitive, diagramed to hell and back. Come for New Orleans, stay for new oracles."
Michael Martone, Author of Michael Martone and Four for a Quarter

Errata edition by MIchael Allen Zell Literature Fiction eBooks

By chapter 2 I had totally given up about thinking in terms of a plot and simply marveled at the verbiage, paragraph by paragraph. That and the gradual revelation of the inner workings of the narrator's mind put this book into its own category. If you are looking for a nice tidy mystery in a colorful setting, forget it. If you want a good read that stretches you a bit, this is the book for you!

Errata edition by MIchael Allen Zell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Errata reminds me of what I value in good literature language that drives the plot. It deserves more than one reading, so at only 110 pages, you may want to read it a few times to savor the sharp tone, dark imagery and rich language. A full review appears in UnderratedReads.
This debut novel from Michael Allen Zell comes in at a slim 110 pages, but there's nothing lightweight about it. The prose is rich and satisfying, capable of being relished as much for the art as the sense. In the book, Mr. Zell takes us on a journey deep into the psyche of narrator Raymond Russell, who is attempting to justify, to himself and the world, his complicity in a violent crime. He doesn't sleep well; his thoughts are tormented and labyrinthine. But like Mr. Zell, he is still capable of enormous tenderness and even humor. In homage to his first love, who died young, Mr. Russell confesses, "I don't have the generosity of spirit to be Eve, in fact her memory is rebuking, but since I know that she considered purgatory any place without pages, the only act I can perform in her name to pay tribute is live the reader's life, and with all my wishing facilities, imagine her content in a house of books." In describing his habits as a gypsy cab driver in New Orleans, he admits that, with or without fares, he prefers to pass the time by taking indirect routes that spell out his own name. Above all, Mr. Russell, a former English professor, is a disciple of language and literature, at times digressing into ruminations over literary figures or convictions about the proper way to tell a story. For those seeking non-hackneyed portrayals of New Orleans (in this case, set during the 1984 World's Fair) and its unique inhabitants, as well as any true lover of language, any chapter of this book is worth the cover price. And while the fate of Mr. Russell may be unclear as his journal-style narrative comes to a close, one can only hope that his creator is churning out additional literature such as this.
I purchased this book because it was described by a reviewer as a detective story that takes place in New Orleans - my home town. However, the pace was very slow, the plot too simple and the author was much too introspective for my reading taste.
Michael Allen Zell is a writer's writer. I first discovered Mr. Zell's prose in the form of the shorty story, and was thrilled (it is not too strong a word) to open the post from containing his debut novel Errata. Errata brims with intelligence and a mastery of language, tamely asserting the eminence of the novel as art. The work consists of a dexterous and lively assortment of involution and plot, literary criticism and meditation (See, e.g. "Day 10", where Mr. Zell gives the reader an exquisitely genial denouncement of dialogue.). An earlier review gave the book two stars for what is described as a want of plot and excessive introspectiveness. Given the multitude of differences in tastes and fancies, the criticism is perhaps fair. The reader might very well have been expecting Doyle. Errata is not a detective novel (thank stars). It is a rich, lively embodiment of literary fiction with all the qualities to outlast the conventional page-turners dressed up in fancy jackets.
