In 2004 the author's first book "The Lost Tomb of Alexander the Great" was published to the accompaniment of international media attention, since it reported the first credible suggestion as to the current whereabouts of the long-vanished corpse of the illustrious conqueror. In the intervening years, progress by testing the candidate remains has been thwarted by the Church authorities, yet much new information has emerged, casting the enigma in an ever more probing light. In this extensively updated and extended account, the meanderings of the evidence have been tracked with scrupulous care and the tangled threads of erstwhile hidden history have been teased apart. Thus the forgotten secrets of one of the greatest mysteries bequeathed to us by the ancient world are laid bare, culminating in the novel suggestion that the body stolen from Alexandria in AD828 and now in Venice may have acquired a false identity at the time that paganism was outlawed by the Emperor of Rome in the 4th century AD.

I found this read to be an excellent platform for a text book, however its heavy going and not an average good read for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

The Quest for the Tomb of Alexander the Great Second Edition Andrew Chugg 9780955679063 Books Reviews

The book of Andrew Michael Chugg is as fashinating as that of Graham Hancock about the quest for The Ark of The Covenant. In the next month, I hope to find some evidence to demonstrate that the Ark is actually in the Church of Maryam Sion in Aksum. Unfortunately, I can do very little as far as the case for Alexander the Great corpse in St. Mark in Venice is concerned.
This is a very intriguing read, that manages to fascinate and entertain the reader without sacrificing the historic truth and the scientific aspects of historical research. Highly recommended
I bought this book as a historical reference for a piece of fiction i was writing and found it very well put together.
Very interesting,factual and thought provoking
history is one of my true love's.
Really intriguing theories about the fate of Alexander and his remains, and the link to St marks in Venice. Well worth a read
Alexandria was one of the jewels of the ancient world, one of its greatest cities, home to Western civilisation's greatest repository of knowledge and to the Pharos, one of the wonders of the world. Primary sources from ancient times have attested to the glory that was Alexandria, describing as well the final resting place of the city's founder, Alexander III the Great of Macedon, whose mummified remains are reported to have been interred in the heart of the ancient metropolis. The visits of successive Roman emperors have been well documented and the author also traces all subsequent mentions of the tomb.
Tragically, centuries of war, natural disasters, successive waves of religious fanaticism and cultural vandalism by occupying powers plundering ancient monuments for building materials have created a situation where almost nothing remains of the ancient Ptolemaic capital.
Temples along with anything which symbolised "pagan" culture were either destroyed or turned into churches by Christian fanatics beginning in the reign of Theodosius, and what was left was either destroyed by earthquake, tidal wave, Muslim fanatics or the forces of subsequent occupations.
Thus, even the layout and dimensions of the ancient city have been a source of controversy, and Andrew Chugg conducts a detailed analysis of all primary sources relating to Alexandria and Alexander's tomb in an effort to determine the fate of the tomb over the centuries.
With detailed references and illustrations, he builds a strong case, and develops a coherent and credible hypothesis that the body of Alexander the Great was removed from the city and is now in Italy, where it is disguised as the remains of a Christian Saint.
As a lifelong admirer of Alexander (and a collector of ancient coins and artefacts bearing his image) I found this an utterly fascinating and beautifully written investigation of a lingering mystery from the ancient world - concerning the fate of one of the greatest figures of world history.
It would be a glorious achievement if we could verify this hypothesis and if the mortal remains of Alexander could be found and identified!
I found this read to be an excellent platform for a text book, however its heavy going and not an average good read for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
