Hard to put down--I started the book yesterday and finished it today. Former priest and scholar Malcolm Ainslie is a homicide detective reinvestigating the serial murders attributed to a recently executed inmate. The story is fast moving with flashbacks to Malcolm's past and a glimpse of the future at the story's end. That glimpse is a real bummer.Product details

A complex and contrived plot. Yet, only because Arthur Hailey was its author, the novel turned out to be a fascinating and riveting read.
An excellently written, most interesting, fast read. I urge and recommend all police/mystery lovers to read this book. I did and loved it.
I have yet to meet a Hailey novel that did not keep me interested throughout. Hailey has the story teller's gift.
Another winner from Hailey. A true page turner, about police and court procedures. Again, a result of deep research, real characters, and a suspenseful plot.
I had read this book back when i was 15. I loved it back then and i still love it today having re-read it after all these years. However, after having read some thrillers/mystery novels lately - the pace is much slower in comparison. It still is a page turner for me but as some other reviewers mentioned here, there is too much detail about the law/police system.
All in all, i might still re-read this one day again in a few years.

Detective is the second book I have read recently. I read a couple of Mr. Hailey’s books many years ago, and I am re-reading them in addition to his other books.
The way he writes the endings leaves you to draw your own conclusions. That is rather refreshing!
Read the book to get the whole story—it will be worth the time!
This book is a good book but it has some places where it is a little confusing. I think this is because of the over abundance of characters. It is hard to keep track of them all. But life is sometimes like that too. You have so many people that come into your life it is hard to keep track of their place in your life. Are they good friends or merely acquaintances? It's a good book but it takes concentration we don't think about when reading a novel.
